We’re going to call my apartment style “eclectic.” But eclectic is really just a nice way of saying a random mix of things I’ve picked up while traveling, and the dishes I buy at the discount store on the corner. This is clearly an unplanned style, and mostly a result of the fact that I have no internal design compass, I’m a freelance journalist (read: broke) and that I probably spend less than 10 hours a week in my apartment. I essentially buy things as needed, and am typically more concerned with necessities like food. Luckily, I’ve got exposed brick, which friends assure me is a decoration in itself –thanks everyone for trying to make me feel better.
Anyways, here’s a few kitschy suggestions that could easily have a home in your apartment and add a little eclectic aka unorganized vibe.
- 7 Day Glass Candles – You’ve probably seen these vigil style candles at some point, typically rocking an image of a Saint or the Virgin Mary. I love the decorations on the glass cases, you can find some pretty quirky ones out there. My preferred brand is Crusader Candle Company based in Brooklyn. You can find these at random boutiques and black magic-esque stores throughout New York City, but if you’re not in the area, check out sights like 13 Moons, All Saints Botanica, Original Botanica or even Amazon (Bonus: some of these are actually 14 Day candles!). Don’t be put off by the slightly ritualistic vibe. The best part about these candles is that they last for a seriously long time.
- Maps — I’ve developed a little bit of a map collection recently, some that I’ve picked up on travels and others that I’ve purchased randomly. I love old maps from places I’ve lived or visited, and some of the best I’ve found are at Pageant Print Shop in East Village. Spend an afternoon browsing your local antique stores or browsing around Google and I’m sure you’ll find something interesting.
- Used Books — There are few things more important to me than a stocked book shelf, filled with books you have and have yet to read. It’s great for conversation and boredom, but you can also use these books for decorations on shelves (throw in an old album cover or two). One of my favorite used books I’ve purchased for my apartment is the WPA Guide to New York City from the 1930′s. You can purchase hard covered reprints of these Federal Writer’s Project guides from the 1980′s of other cities and states as well.
Random Tip from an Amazon Addict: Buy your cleaning products and other random apartment necessities, like hangers and trash bags, on Amazon. Especially (okay probably only) if you have Amazon Prime. Free shipping and competitive pricing is a major plus. As I’ve mentioned before, you’ll stay stocked even when you don’t have time to head to the store.
