As a guy who hasn’t signed a lease in 3 years and hasn’t paid rent in 2013 I am probably not the best person to give you advice about home decor. My life consists of two carry-on luggage bags, a backpack, and a series of boxes scattered about California — some in the Bay Area, and some now down in Los Angeles. The idea of home for me is a distant memory; something that I am more aware of than ever, a void I am trying to fill.
Somewhere in the depths of a storage unit in Palo Alto, however, there are two items that will eventually go up in an apartment once that next lease is signed. One is my Michigan “Block M” flag, and the other is a Bon Iver concert poster from the Greek Theatre at UC Berkeley from the fall of 2011.
Bon Iver Greek Theatre Concert Poster
Why these items? For me, they are represent two of the strongest memories that I have. The flag represents the best four years of my life at the University that I love. It is inherent part of my identity. The concert poster represents the purpose for my first ever trip to the state of California, which upon arrival I knew was right for me, the next step in my journey. No matter how messy the living situation, California is the place I call home.
Home is a place that should be filled with great memories, make sure find ways to incorporate them into your living.
