Guide to “Gearing” Up for Winter: Discounts

Winter clothing is not a subject I know too much about, but I do know that good quality winter gear can be expensive. Here are two of my recommendations for staying warm without breaking the bank.

First, Sierra Trading Post is a great website to get name brand winter clothing at a discount. When I went to Alaska for a service trip five years ago I bought my shell, snow pants, and snow boots from this site. All of which are still in good shape today. STP has all of the well known brands like The North Face, Merrell, Columbia, Mountain Hardwear, and Marmot for at least 25% off (most of the time it’s in the 30-60% range). This is a great website to use for any outdoor gear, really, so check it out.

Second, the REI Membership is worth signing up for if you even remotely enjoy the outdoors. For a one time fee of $20, you get a lifetime membership, which includes an annual 10% refund. So, if you plan on spending at least $201 at REI within in the next 50-60  years, you should get this membership and you’ll come out ahead. Other perks include exclusive sales and discounts on rental equipment and trips.

Happy  Thanksgiving!
